All Australian take risks in their day to day lives that may affect their health.
It is hoped the decision to taken these risks is based on informed judgement due to an awareness of the implications to ones own health.
This is hopefully the case with tobacco smoking, marijuana use, and alcohol consumption.
In looking at the role of the pharmacist in remote health practice, it is clear that they (pharmacists) are in the best position to undertake community awareness of the risks associated with substance abuse.
It remains to be shown how much a pharmacists intervention in remote health can lead to health gains.
Here is one area where research could be done and which would provide a quantifiable outcome. A reduction in the incidence of smokers, drinkers or pot users would undoubtedly assist the health of a community.
The Aboriginal population is high users of each of the above three substances. The need to explain risks is obvious.
Health promotion resources in remote areas are not cost effective, except through mass marketing campaigns. The degree of reach to the target is not high due to communications problems. Imagination is needed but the outcome would be worth it.
Pharmacy needs some projects with a good rate of success to justify involvement in remote health, over and above the supply function.
Surely this one such opportunity.
Health risks should only be taken based on informed judgement.
People in control of their own health.
Give it a go.
